An app is an automated Discord account. It utilizes the Discord API. They have an "APP" tag next to their username. They can be added through the API. Apps typically follow a command structure, where a user sends a prefixed message and the app responds, though apps can work in many different ways.

History[]

The first app was named Airhorn Solutions and it was released on April 1st, 2016.[1] In its first week, it sent over 500K messages in over 8K servers. It introduced Discord's official API.[2]

As of April 2020, there are over 3 million apps created to date,[3] and they send over 28.5 billion messages each year.

In April 2024, the name has changed from BOT to APP for an unknown reason.
