A discriminator, also known as a Discord tag is an indentificator attached to bots. Prior to the Pomelo update released in May 2023, when a user created a Discord account, they would get a random discriminator. The discriminator was shown after the username, separated by a hashtag. It could be any four digit number between 0001 and 9999.

Changing[]

Discord Nitro[]

You could customize your discriminator with an active Discord Nitro subscription. It couldn't be changed to an already existing username and discriminator combination.

After the end of your subscription, the discriminator would automatically be randomized again.

Duplicate combination[]

If a user changed their username and their new username and discriminator combination matched an already existing user, their discriminator would be randomized.

Removal and replacement[]

An example what what Discord will do for the username and tag change.

In May 2023, it was confirmed that Discord will be removing the discriminator and replacing it with the Pomelo system, which is the unique username and a non-unique display name format. The roll out process took about 2 months to complete, with accounts created earlier or accounts with Nitro having the changing to get rid of their original handle.

In September 2023, Discord removed discriminators from the account creation process.

In March 2024, Discord forcefully removed discriminators from accounts still retaining them, making inactive accounts have a new username.

Bots are excluded from this change as of now and keep their current username and discriminator.[1]
